Wild Bird Make Your Own Suet Recipe

I cooked up this recipe when I ran out of pre-packaged suet from the store. All the birds love it and its super easy.

• 1 cup shortening
• 1 cup flour
• 1 cup cornmeal
• 1 cup peanut butter(regular or crunchy)
• 1 cup of any wild bird seed
• suet form or cupcake liners with cupcake baking pad

Directions:

In a medium saucepan melt shortening over medium heat, add peanut butter stir till melted, add cornmeal and flour stir until well mixed, add birdseed. Mix. Remove from heat and pour your bird treat into your lined cupcake pan. Refrigerate until solid, remove and store in a seal proof bag or plastic container. Refrigerate or freeze if desired. 

Your birds will love you for it this winter season, it provides high fat energy to keep them warm during this cold winter season. I have just recently started making this recipe for them and every bird that comes to the feeder eats some of it. Its a winner!

Fall Bird Migration

Sniff, Sniff... It has begun, Fall bird migration. Soon my backyard bird scene will change, my chipping sparrows will be replaced with flocks of House Sparrows and Juncos. The only good thing about migration, I might get a chance to see a bird that I normally don't see everyday. Today the feeders were especially busy, lots of chickadees, downy woodpeckers and quite a few goldfinch spend the day here, not sure why. So I decided to try out our Sony Handycam, to see if it took decent pictures, since I got sand in my camera at the beach and it just wont zoom anymore. While I was trying it out, a female Rose Grosbeak stopped by to pig out and another bird, with a pale green to yellow plumage stopped by. I picked up my handy Pennsylvania bird guide, but after looking and looking I still couldn't identify this bird. It hung out for a short time, landed on the bird feeder hanger probably to see what all the fuss was about, but never had a bite. Must be a bug or berry eater. I only got 2 shots of the bird before it left. Here is some photos. And from the looks of it, I'll be buying a new camera, this Handycam takes horrible pictures.

Swans at Camel Beach Water Park

We spent the day at Camel Beach Water Park, was supposed to be the hottest day so far this year, but high in the Pocono Mountains the temp drops about 10 degrees. I don't know what was worse the price to get in or the long wait to get on a water ride. Total price was over a hundred dollars for 2 people. I couldn't image taking kids along, you would spend your entire paycheck there. On our 2 mile trek back to our car we came upon a pond with 2 beautiful swans. People must feed them on a regular basis because as soon as I came up with the camera, they started to swim right over to me. So I got some nice shots of them.

No food and now he's done with me. It was nice to see them so close up, I've never been this close to a swan before.
